Magic Jack
Radio talk show host Craig Crossman endorses a product called the Magic Jack. It lets you make free local and long distance calls to anywhere in the US and Canada for the first year. You can make the calls through your landline or your computer but not your cell phone. The gadget costs $40 and service after the first year costs $20. Magic Jack includes free voicemail, call waiting, three-way calling, and directory assistance. You can try the device free through their 30-day trial.
Read about what phone and Internet connections Magic Jack is compatible with. It doesn't with all area codes or with cell phones. A simple way to determine if this device could save you money is to multiply your monthly landline bill by 12 so you have the yearly cost.
Still seem sketchy? A lot of TV stations and newspapers have reported on the Magic Jack.
